Event Image:

The Nile Valley Foundation recently held an event tagged "MAAFA" -which means a tragic story in Swahili - at the City Hall, Churchill Square, Edmonton, Alberta. According to the event organizer, Ghanaian Nii Tawiah Okurajah Koney II, the Nile Valley Foundation is "dedicated to sharing our African and Canadian history with Canadians towards some positive impact in the community."

Towards achieving this goal, the Nile Valley Foundation History Library project was initiated by its founder. The Foundation draws from the lives of historical figures like Ghana's Kwame Nkrumah, Nigeria's Nnamdi Azikiwe, South Africa's Nelson Mandela, American Martin Luther King Jr., and the Caribbean Marcus Garvey.

The 2014 event had as its theme: the Genesis of Our Story with Onookome Okome, a Nigerian professor of film studies at the University of Alberta, as the paper presenter.
