The Easy Way to Prepare Tasty Mandazis

Mandazi is a snack that is popular in Eastern Africa. The snack is easy to make and with the many alterations one can make to the basic recipe, everyone is sure to find this snack a delightful treat.

Ingredients

2 ¼ cups of all purpose flour

1 egg (whisked)

½ cup of sugar

½ cup of milk

1 teaspoon of yeast

3 tablespoons of melted butter

¼ teaspoon of cinnamon

¼ teaspoon of ground cardamom

¼ teaspoon of ginger

A pinch of salt

Putting it all together

Pour all dry ingredients into a bowl, mix with a fork and then add all wet ingredients.

Mix the ingredients in the bowl - using a wooden spatula or your hands - until everything is evenly mixed in. For best result, ensure that your dough is not sticking to the sides of the bowl. If you find that the dough is still sticky, mix in a little more flour.

Cover the dough in a tightly sealed container and let rise for about an hour.

Place a pan of oil on medium heat.

Roll out dough on lightly floured surface to about a quarter of an inch thickness and cut into squares or triangles.

Throw the squares (or triangles) into the oil and fry each side until brown- it takes 30 seconds to one minute to get my desired result. It could take a little less or a little more for you, just ensure that your mandazis are cooked on the inside without getting too dark or burnt on the outside.

Take the mandazis out and sprinkle powder sugar over them.

Suggested serving

You could serve the mandazis warm or cold, with a glass of your favourite beverage, any time of the day. They are that versatile!
